(Armed) Commissioned Level 3 Training in Texas
The Level 3 course is mandatory for anyone seeking to work as a commissioned/armed security officer in Texas. This training typically takes 6–8 hours to complete and covers advanced security responsibilities, firearms safety, use-of-force laws, and Texas legal requirements for armed personnel.
Upon successful completion, students will be awarded their Level 3 Certificate, which qualifies them to apply for a Texas Level 3 Commissioned Security License.
How Do You Get Your Level 3 (Armed) Security Certificate in Texas?
Step 1: Enroll Online
Sign up for the Level 3 Commissioned/Armed Security Officer Course. This course is 100% online and self-paced, covering all required Texas DPS topics for armed security training.
Step 2: Complete the Online Training
Work through lessons covering firearms safety, use of force, advanced security duties, Texas laws, and self-defense tactics (required under H.B. 3424, effective January 1, 2024). Upon completion, students will receive a certificate of course completion for the online training.
Step 3: Schedule Firearms & Defensive Tactics Qualification
The online course does not include hands-on firearms or defensive tactics training. Students must schedule and pay for their range qualification and defensive tactics separately. Many Range Instructor Referrals are available for your convenience. The certificate from the online course must be signed off by the Firearms Instructor after range qualification.
Step 4: Pass the Final Exam
Complete the online modules and pass the final exam to earn your Level 3 Certificate of Completion (online portion).
Step 5: Apply with the State
Use your completed certificate, along with your range and defensive tactics sign-off, to apply for your Texas Level 3 Commissioned Security Officer License through the TOPS system at the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). Submit fingerprints, background check, and fees.
Step 6: Get Licensed and Start Working
Once approved by DPS, you’re officially licensed to work as a Level 3 (armed) Security Officer in Texas.
